What is the Quadrupole ICP-MS with Collision/Reaction Cell?

A quadrupole ICP-MS with a collision or reaction cell is the standard workhorse for multi-element trace analysis. Helium kinetic energy discrimination removes most polyatomic interferences, making it suitable for routine water, food, clinical and pharmaceutical testing at ppt to ppm concentrations.

Overview

This configuration places a quadrupole mass filter after an octopole or quadrupole collision cell. Helium mode with kinetic energy discrimination is applied to nearly all analytes in a single run, removing interferences such as ArO, ArCl and chloride or carbon-based polyatomics without needing specific reactive gases. Optional hydrogen, oxygen or ammonia modes handle specific difficult analytes. Plasma is typically 1550 W with a 27 or 40 MHz generator, and high-matrix or aerosol dilution interfaces extend tolerance to about 0.5 to 3 percent total dissolved solids. Analog and pulse detector modes cover nine orders of magnitude. Typical sensitivity is above 50 Mcps per ppm for Y, and detection limits are in the low ppt range for most elements. The instrument is reliable and widely supported by methods such as EPA 200.8 and USP <233>.

How does it work?

In ICP-MS, a liquid sample is nebulized into a fine aerosol, passes through a spray chamber, and is carried by argon into a plasma torch. A radio-frequency coil at 27 or 40 MHz sustains a plasma at about 6000 to 10000 K, which desolvates, atomizes and ionizes the analytes, mostly as singly charged ions. Ions are extracted through sampler and skimmer cones into a high-vacuum region, focused by ion lenses, and separated by a mass analyzer, most commonly a quadrupole. A collision or reaction cell removes polyatomic interferences such as 40Ar16O on 56Fe, using helium kinetic energy discrimination or reactive gases. An electron multiplier in pulse and analog modes counts ions across up to nine orders of magnitude.

What are the key features?

  • Collision cell in helium mode removing polyatomic interferences for all analytes at once
  • Optional reaction gases such as hydrogen, oxygen and ammonia for difficult analytes
  • Aerosol dilution or high-matrix interface extending tolerance to several percent dissolved solids
  • Dual-mode detector covering nine orders of magnitude without detector switching delays
  • Peltier-cooled spray chamber and quartz torch with easy-to-remove demountable design
  • Software with preset methods for EPA 200.8, USP <233> and ISO 17294-2

What are the technical specifications?

A typical quadrupole icp-ms with collision/reaction cell configuration offers mass range of m/z 2–260, sensitivity (Y 89, standard mode) of ≥ 50 Mcps/ppm, detection limit (Pb, Cd, As in He mode) of < 1 ppt (typical), background (m/z 220) of < 1 cps, oxide ratio (CeO/Ce) of ≤ 1.5% and doubly charged ratio (Ce++/Ce) of ≤ 2%. Values are indicative of the product class; the exact figures for each configuration are confirmed on the quotation and the calibration documents supplied with the instrument.

Which applications is it used for?

The Quadrupole ICP-MS with Collision/Reaction Cell is used in drinking and wastewater testing, food and beverage toxic element screening, elemental impurities in pharmaceuticals, clinical blood and urine metals and soil and sediment extracts. Across the wider ICP-MS class, laboratories also deploy it for heavy metals in drinking water and wastewater, elemental impurities in pharmaceuticals and toxic elements in food and beverages.

Which standards and certifications apply?

Relevant standards and methods include USP <233> Elemental Impurities Procedures, ICH Q3D Elemental Impurities, EPA Method 200.8, EPA Method 6020B, ISO 17294-2, ASTM D5673, EN 15763, GB 5009.268, ISO/IEC 17025 and IEC 61010-1. Certification candidates for this model are CE, ISO 9001 manufacturing and IEC 61010-1 safety; each is to be confirmed for the specific configuration before shipment, and certificates are supplied only where they have been issued.

ICP-MS requires high-purity argon, typically 99.996 percent or better, with consumption around 15 to 20 L per minute, plus cooling water or a recirculating chiller, dedicated exhaust ventilation and stable power. Use trace-metal-grade acids, low-blank labware such as PFA or FEP, and ultrapure water at 18.2 MΩ·cm. Tune daily for sensitivity, oxide ratio (CeO/Ce below 2 percent) and doubly charged ratio (Ce++/Ce below 3 percent). Clean or replace cones, torch and nebulizer according to matrix load, and check the peristaltic pump tubing regularly. Use internal standards to correct drift. For pharmaceutical and regulated work, require software with audit trails and follow USP <233> and ICH Q3D method validation.

How do I select the right Quadrupole ICP-MS with Collision/Reaction Cell?

Select a quadrupole ICP-MS with collision cell for routine multi-element work where helium mode covers the interferences. Step up to ICP-MS/MS for complex interferences or highly variable matrices. In an RFQ, specify sensitivity, oxide and doubly charged ratios, matrix tolerance, gas lines, autosampler and required method packages.

How does it compare with other ICP-MS variants?

Choose the ICP-MS class by interference severity, detection limit and budget. A single quadrupole with a collision cell handles most water, food and clinical work at low cost. Triple quadrupole ICP-MS/MS adds mass-shift reaction chemistry for difficult interferences such as sulfur, phosphorus, arsenic in chloride and rare earth oxides. Sector-field instruments offer high resolution and the lowest background for semiconductor and geochemical work, and TOF systems capture the full mass spectrum for fast transient signals. Check matrix tolerance, for example total dissolved solids up to 0.2 percent or aerosol dilution options for higher levels, argon consumption, sample introduction kits, autosampler and software compliance features. Verify the detection limits and background equivalent concentrations in your own matrix rather than relying on deionized water values.

Frequently asked questions about Quadrupole ICP-MS with Collision/Reaction Cell

It can analyze most of the periodic table in one run, typically 60 to 70 elements, in helium mode. A few analytes such as Se, As at high chloride or P and S at low levels may need an additional reaction mode or an ICP-MS/MS system.
