What is the Multichannel Potentiostat/Galvanostat?

A multichannel potentiostat/galvanostat controls several three-electrode cells at once, with eight to sixty-four channels sharing one control computer. It is used for parallel corrosion screening, battery formation studies and combinatorial electrode testing where throughput matters.

Overview

Each channel contains its own control amplifier and current-to-voltage converter, so cells are electrically independent and can run different techniques simultaneously. Channels are often grouped in modular housings of eight or sixteen that can be added later. Typical specifications are plus or minus 10 V applied potential, current ranges from 1 microampere to 100 milliamperes per channel, and impedance capability on selected channels. Software schedules experiments, groups channels by protocol and aggregates data for statistics, which suits screening of inhibitors, coatings, catalysts or electrolytes. Grounding topologies matter: floating channels allow stacked or grounded cells, while common-ground designs are simpler but restrict cell arrangements. Throughput gains are greatest when sample preparation, not measurement, is the bottleneck. For long battery cycling campaigns, channel independence and data redundancy are more valuable than the highest per-channel bandwidth.

How does it work?

Measurements use a three-electrode cell. The potentiostat applies a programmed potential between the working and counter electrodes, while a high-impedance input senses the reference electrode. A control amplifier continuously adjusts the cell current so the working electrode potential equals the set value, and a current-to-voltage converter measures that current across a selectable resistor, giving current ranges that can span twelve decades on one instrument. Compliance or output voltage, typically plus or minus 12 to 20 V, sets how much current can be delivered in high-resistance cells. In galvanostat mode the instrument controls current and monitors potential instead. A frequency response analyzer superimposes small-amplitude sine waves for impedance measurements over frequencies from microhertz to megahertz. Resolution is limited by the analog-to-digital converter and by noise from cables, stirring and the reference electrode, which is why shielded cells and a Faraday cage are common. Software controls the waveform, records data and fits the electrochemical model.

What are the key features?

  • Eight to sixty-four independent channels per system
  • Individual control amplifier and current converter in each channel
  • Floating or common-ground channel configurations
  • Parallel execution of different techniques across channels
  • Scheduling software with protocol grouping and statistics
  • Expandable modular cabinets for later channel additions

What are the technical specifications?

A typical multichannel potentiostat/galvanostat configuration offers number of channels of 8–64, expandable, applied potential range of ±10 V per channel, current ranges of 1 µA–100 mA per channel, current resolution of 0.1% of range, compliance voltage of ±10 V and grounding of Floating or common ground. Values are indicative of the product class; the exact figures for each configuration are confirmed on the quotation and the calibration documents supplied with the instrument.

Which applications is it used for?

The Multichannel Potentiostat/Galvanostat is used in corrosion inhibitor screening, battery formation and cycle testing, coating and catalyst evaluation, electrolyte additive studies and sensor array development. Across the wider Potentiostats class, laboratories also deploy it for corrosion and inhibitor evaluation, battery and supercapacitor testing and electrochemical sensor and biosensor development.

Which standards and certifications apply?

Relevant standards and methods include IEC 61010-1, ISO 17475, ISO 16773-1, ASTM G5, ASTM G61 and ASTM G71. Certification candidates for this model are CE, IEC 61010-1 safety and ISO 9001 manufacturing; each is to be confirmed for the specific configuration before shipment, and certificates are supplied only where they have been issued.

Install the instrument on a stable bench away from motors, pumps and switching power supplies, and connect the cell in a Faraday cage for low-current work. Use shielded cable and keep the reference electrode close to the working electrode to reduce uncompensated resistance; measure and compensate that resistance, especially in low-conductivity electrolytes. Verify performance with a dummy cell or a standard redox couple such as ferri-ferrocyanide before critical experiments. Grounding arrangements must avoid loops between the potentiostat, the cell and any peripheral equipment such as rotators, lamps or temperature baths. Calibrate the internal references annually, replace worn electrode leads and clips, and record the cell configuration, electrodes, reference type and scan parameters with each data set so results remain traceable.

How do I select the right Multichannel Potentiostat/Galvanostat?

Choose a multichannel system when many independent cells must run the same or different protocols in parallel, as in inhibitor screening or battery formation. If measurements are occasional, one single-channel instrument is more economical. In an RFQ, specify channel count, per-channel current range, grounding scheme, impedance needs, cycling duration and software features.

How does it compare with other Potentiostats variants?

Choose the number of cells you must run at once, because multi-channel instruments cost less per channel than separate units and share one software licence. Then match current range and resolution to the application: corrosion and battery tests need amperes with moderate resolution, while microelectrode and sensor work needs picoampere resolution. Check the compliance voltage for high-resistance electrolytes, the impedance frequency range, the maximum data acquisition rate for fast kinetics, and whether the software includes the techniques you use, such as cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, pulsed techniques, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and galvanostatic cycling. Modular instruments allow later expansion. For field corrosion surveys, a portable USB unit connected to a laptop is often sufficient. Specify the cell, electrodes, cables and any booster or low-current module in an RFQ.

Frequently asked questions about Multichannel Potentiostat/Galvanostat

No. Channels are independent, so different current ranges can be set for each cell. In screening work this lets low-activity and high-activity samples run in the same batch without reconfiguration, though the software should allow per-channel range settings.
